Metal Review: Destroyer 666 – Wildfire (2016)

Destroyer 666 - Wildfire

Purchase Destroyer 666 – Wildfire

Australian black/thrash metal veterans Destroyer 666 are back with their latest opus, Wildfire, and guess what? It kicks ass as we have come to expect from this powerhouse. The chunky riffs that the band has brought to the table in their time are no less impactful with Wildfire

The opening track, “Traitor,” is as vicious as you would expect given its title. The raspy vocals are dirty as ever and the high, clean vocals are as sharp as a razor. The guitar work is exquisite and makes the entire song a huge win for the band. With “Live and Burn,” the guitars do not let up and the vocals are even more evil. “Artiglio Del Diavlo” is a super-charged instrumental with some great riff work and equally skilled drum lines.

“Hounds at ya Back” opens with a hypnotic, haunting clean guitar before turning up the aggression and becoming one of the more catchy songs on the album. Not sure that I would have ever expected to call a Destroyer 666 song catchy. “Hymn of Dionysus” is a strong track with some of the dirtier vocals on the album. The guitar riffs are strong and the entire vibe of the song is evil. The title track, “Wildfire,” is a three and a half fury of massive thrash riffs and lead sections.

At the end of the day, Destroyer 666 musically crushes it with Wildfire and destroys the listener with riff on top of riff without even an apology. This is easily my favorite album of the year so far, but we have a long way to go in 2016 yet.
