Metal Review: Rotting Christ – Rituals (2016)

Rotting Christ - Rituals

Purchase Rotting Christ – Rituals

Greek extreme metal tyrants Rotting Christ are back with their latest effort, Rituals, a collection of ten tracks with pretty bug shoes to fill since it is the follow-up to the band’s strongest effort to date.

I have repeatedly praised the band’s previous effort, Kata Ton Daimona Eaytoy, because of its intense progression throughout the entire album. While it does not stray far from its predecessors, it surely had a more polished sound than their previous albums and simply kicked ass. With Rituals, the band attempts to recreate the same magic.

The album opens with “In Nomine Dei Nostri,” which sounds as if it came out of the recording sessions of the band’s last release. That is not a knock on the band, but they have a formula that is successful, so they utilize it to the best of their ability. The second track is “Nigmar,” which is simply brutal. The track opens innocently enough and then cranks it up with a simple riff merged with some ominous chants making for one of the most evil songs the band has ever written. The droning riff makes it way though the opening and the riffs, but never feels like it is overkill in its repetitiveness.

“Eithe Kyrie” speeds up the tempo a little and introduces chaos as only Rotting Christ can bring to the table. “Apage Satana” is pure evil embodied into a metal track. From the opening chants and drum lines, the track stands out as one that will set the stage for something special to come. That something special is “Tou Thanatou” with its continuous chants and rhythmic guitar lines. The drums are frenetic and explosive and the song becomes one of the standouts on the album especially the unexpected guitar solo.

“For a Voice Link Thunder” smashes out of its introduction with a crunching riff and quickly jumps into a haunting vocal melody.

At the end of the day, Rituals kicks ass and makes no apologies to its listeners. The chaos that the band brings to the table is expected and the band is breathing rare air right now because they seem to be on an entirely different plain than they once were. There output is exceptional within the last few years. That is not a knock on their old stuff, which is still good in itself as well.
