The 2014 Wicked Channel Hall of Fame and interview—Inductee 1-Carmine Appice

The 2015 Wicked Channel Hall of Fame is something I really take so personal. I do not just pick names out of a hat like some and say “oh that is a Hall of Fame person”. Nor, do I just give them a place, I want the people I induct to acknowledge it and talk to our readers about what makes them worthy. This year is special; I am going to my roots. First up is a drummer who should be on every Hall of Fame page there is in existence. Carmine Appice has a history that has lasted, you know what why should you let me tell you about this. Let the man himself speak, welcome my first inductee into our Hall of Fame class of 2015, the drum god himself Carmine Appice.

1.First off, Carmine Appice this is such an honor to put you in the Wicked Channel Hall of Fame. What was the first record or song that inspired you to chase music?

GENE KRUPA BUDDY RICH DRUM BATTLE RECORD

2.Were drums always your first love? Also, do you think your love inspired your little brother to follow?

YES IS WAS MY FIRST MUSICAL LOVE AS WELL AS SINGING IN VOCAL GROUPS THERE ARE 7 DRUMMERS IN MY FATHERS SIDE OF THE FAMILY I WAS NUMBER 2 MY COUSIN JOEY HAD A DRUM SET THAT INSPIRED ME TO PLAY VINNY WAS INSPIRED BY ME FOR SURE

3.Let’s talk about right now; there is a rumor that you and your ex-Blue Murder band-mate Tony Franklin have a project with Joe Lynn Turner? Is this just rumor or are we going to get a full length cd or tour?

THIS IS A NEW BAND ..THE CD WAS RELEASED TODAY BAND AND CD CALLED RATED X IT IS A CLASSIC/METAL ALBUM WITH SONGS FROM 70S AND 80S WITH TODAY’S SONICS IT HAS BEEN CRITICALLY ACCLAIMED ALREADY AND WE ARE PLANNING GIGS , CHECK OUT FACEBOOK RATEDXROCKS SEE VIDEOS ETC..

4.Since we touched on it, how was working with John Sykes and Tony Franklin on Blue Murder? The band was around for what two cds and that tribute record. Were there any plans on doing more with this band?

IT WAS A GREAT BAND BUT FOR SOME REASON IT DIDN’T GO AS BIG AS IT SHOULD HAVE. THEN GRUNGE CAME IN AND KILLED IT. I TRIED FOR A REUNION FOR 12 YEARS IT NEVER HAPPENED…RATED X IS LIKE BLUE MURDER WITH JOE LYNN SINGING AS YOU WILL SEE WHEN YOU HEAR IT…

5.You also had a history with Rod Stewart as well. You played on some of his classic records. How was it working with Rod Stewart? Do you still keep in contact or was the split bad?

ROD WAS GREAT TO WORK WITH..HE WAS THE BEST FRONT-MAN IN ROCK WHEN I WORKED WITH HIM . I LOVED THE MUSIC THE BIG CROWDS. I CO WROTE TWO OF HIS BIGGEST HITS IT WAS A BLAST. I SEE HIM ONCE IN A WHILE AND GO TO EVENTS HE’S AT.

6.A few metal fans may know you from your time with King Kobra, especially since in the first video they ever did you were the only one without blonde hair. What made a respected drummer like you be associated with a glam band?

THAT WAS THE 80S KING KOBRA HAD A LOOK BUT IT WAS A PLAYING BAND UNLIKE SOME OF THE OTHER BANDS FOR THE 80S…ALL MY GUYS IN KOBRA LOOKED GOOD FOR CHICKS AND KICKED ASS PLAYING FOR THE GUYS..IT WAS ALL ABOUT IMAGE AND MTV IN THE 80S..SO I JOINED THE PARTY

7.Was there any animosity when Johnny quit going to W.A.S.P and Mick went to Bullet Boys?

YES I WAS PISSED AT JOHNNY BUT HE WAS DRUGGED OUT AT THE TIME AND CAPITAL RECORDS WAS GIVING US A PROBLEM MARK FREE WANTED TO SING SOFTER STUFF..SO WHEN JOHNNY LEFT WE REPLACE MARK FREE WITH
Marq Torien AND JOHNNY WITH LONNIE VINCENT …THEN WHILE WE WERE WRITING NEW KING KOBRA SONGS ..MICK LONNIE AND MARK LEFT STARTED BULLET BOYS AND USE SONG IDEAS WE WERE WRITING FOR KK ..THEIR BIG HIT IT WAS A KK SONG. AND THEIR SECOND HIT WAS MY IDEA….THEN AFTER THAT WITHOUT OUR HELP..NEXT ALBUM FAILED

8.What made you guys want to reform the band again? And why today is Mark no longer in the band and you have ex-Quiet Riot singer Shortino?

WE WERE ASKED BY FRONTIERS TO DO A CD..MARK FREE IS NOW A WOMAN NAMED MARCEY FREE WE DID NOT GET ALONG WHEN WE DECIDED TO DO AN ALBUM AND I DIDN’T KNOW WHAT IT WOULD BE LIKE WITH KING KOBRA WITH A SINGER WITH A SEX CHANGE…SO WE GOT PAUL WHO I KNEW WAS A GREAT SINGER/WRITER

9. Speaking of that, did you see what was going on with Mark Free? Was this a shock that one day this guy became Marcie or was this something that the band knew all along?

NO NONE OF US HAD A CLUE IT WAS A TOTAL SHOCK TO US …

10. If music did not open up for you and Vanilla Fudge never existed, what was your back-up plan?

JUST TO PLAY MUSIC WEDDINGS PARTIES ETC. MUSICIANS MAKE GOOD MONEY STILL THESE DAYS . MY DRUM TEACHER DID THAT AND MADE GOOD MONEY..

11. How did you meet Pat Travers? And how did working with Pat go?

I MET PAT TRAVERS IN 1982 WHEN HE OPENED UP FOR TED NUGENT WHEN I WAS PLAYING WITH TED…PAT IS A REALLY NICE GUY. GREAT GUITARIST AND WRITER. WE HAD A GREAT TIME PLAYING TOGETHER AND WOULD DO IT AGAIN IF WE COULD.

12. I have to go back to Rod Stewart. How did you meet him? Did you have to audition for the gig? Those tours had to be fun? Any stories that are legal and you can talk about..ha ha?

I MET ROD WHEN HE WAS IN HE JEFF BECK GROUP . WE BECAME FRIENDS ..THEN WHEN HE WAS IN THE FACES WE TOURED TOGETHER WITH CACTUS AND FACES SO I KNEW HIM THEN. HE ASKED ME WHEN I CALLED HIS TOUR MANAGER ABOUT PLAYING IN HIS BAND HE ASKED ME TO CHECK OUT THE BAND AND IF I LIKED IT I CAN JOIN..SO IN A SENSE I AUDITIONED THE BAND..QUICK STORY..ROD GETS INTO A LIMO WITH JUST ME AND HIM..AND SAYS “IT’S A DRAG BEING A LEGEND”! I SAID “YES I KNOW WHAT YA MEAN”!! HE SAID THAT WHY WE ARE PLAYING TOGETHER WE ARE BOTH LEGENDS HAHA…

(I was at the tour when you guys played in Biloxi, and he was booed off the stage when he was drinking with no microphone around but the song was playing. Accept opened that show and they were booed out the auditorium.

WHAT WE NEVER HAD A TAPE THAT CRAZY WE USE TO TAPE THE LYRICS TO BOB DAISLEY’S BACK WHEN OZZY COULDN’T REMEMBER THEM CAUSE HE WAS DRUNK

(Ed- blame Andy Secher at Hit Parader, yeah that is who to blame or Gerri at Metal Edge..those crumbs reported every half truth or lie with rehashed photos for years)

14. Now back to Ozzy, I forgot for a second you were touring with him. How was that experience? Did you get to meet Sharon, if so did you see then what we say now?

IT WAS EASY WORKING WITH OZZY..HE WAS ALWAYS A GENTLEMEN EVEN WHEN DRUNK SHE FIRE ME OFF THE TOUR SAID MY NAME WAS TOO BIG AND I WAS GONE..OZZY HAD NOTHING TO DO WITH IT..DOES THAT ANSWER IT?

15. You also worked with Paul Stanley of Kiss. How was that experience?

I’VE KNOWN PAUL SINCE 1979 HE WAS ALWAYS A FUN GUY TO HANG WITH. HE HOOKED ME UP WITH HIS MANAGER BILL AUCOIN WHICHED HELPED MY CAREER. PLAYING WITH HIM ON HIS CD WAS A GREAT TIME FOR SURE

16. Do you view the internet as to why music seems to be dying in America? I mean the overseas has the internet as well but music over there is doing hand over fist still.

I THINK ITS RADIO KILLING MUSIC IT BECAME TOO CORPORATE. AND YES INTERNET KILLED RECORD CD AND DVD SALES WITH YOU TUBE WHY BUY ANYTHING WHEN YOU GET IT FREE

17. When you hear the words “session musician”. What are the first words that come to mind? Do you think they get a fair shake in terms of what they bring to the experience?

THE REAL SESSION GUYS GET PAID WELL AND THAT’S WHAT THEY DO FOR A LIVING . SOME GUYS DON’T GET ANY PRESS BUT THEY DON’T CARE I GUESS..

18. What band would you have loved to work for?

MANNHEIM ORCHESTRA WOW I CANT SPELL IT BUT LOVE THE MUSIC

19. Now you been on a tour with a who’s who of openers and headliners, who were the best to you? And I am begging you for dirt, which was the worst to deal with?

THE BEST WAS ROD STEWART HE WAS FAIR TO ALL OF US AND WAS LIKE ONE OF THE GUYS…THE WORST WAS OZZY BECAUSE OF WHAT SHARON DID TO ME
