Two career criminals go on a killing spree which eventually leads them to a small rural town where a group of graduate students are staying for a week-end. When they break into the Van Hooten residence to terrorize and kill the inhabitants, they discover the house is owned by a cult leader who turns the hunters into the hunted.

Director: Devon Mikolas
Writer: Devon Mikolas
Stars: Bill Moseley, Leslie Easterbrook, Allan Kayser

Director Devon Mikolas’s feature length directorial debut is an interesting little occult piece featuring some genre favorites including Bill Moseley and Leslie Easterbrook. It is not every director that can say that they began their feature length directing career by directing names such as those, but Mikolas not only directed “House of the Witchdoctor,” but also wrote the film.

“House of the Witchdoctor” becomes a catchy film that leaves the viewer wanting to see more. Do not get me wrong. The film is not flawless, but it will leave the viewer entertained throughout the majority of the watch. Of course, you have to make some assumptions and allow some things to pass in order to fully enjoy the film, but the fact of the matter is that the majority of films I watch are just not that good. “House of the Witchdoctor” portrays itself as a fun film to pass an evening with.

The most frightening part of this film is the realism to our society that the film portrays. While most would call this film’s plot a far reach, the fact of the matter is that the beliefs mentioned in this film are indeed practiced by many people with a loose grip on sanity. Perhaps my favorite scenes of the film are the interplay between father, mother and daughter at the end of the film as the school semester begins again. This off the cuff humorous element add some levity to the film and shows that it is not taking itself as seriously as a lot of other films would.
