Here are some of the more intriguing horror (or somewhat related to horror) DVD / Blu-ray releases landing in January 2014.
January 07, 2014:
Big Ass Spider
An exterminator (Greg Grunberg) and his Hispanic sidekick (Lombardo Boyar) are caught in an epic battle when a military assault fails to contain a giant alien spider rampaging through the city of Los Angeles.
Birth of the Living Dead
Filmmaker Rob Kuhns examines the volatile social climate that gave birth to George A. Romero’s highly-influential horror classic “Night of the Living Dead,” while paying tribute to the staunchly independent filmmaker and his unconventional methods.
We Are What We Are
A seemingly wholesome and benevolent family, the Parkers, have always kept to themselves, and for good reason. Behind closed doors, patriarch Frank (Bill Sage, “Boardwalk Empire”) rules his family with a rigorous ferver, determined to keep his ancestral customs intact at any cost. As a torrential rainstorm moves into the area, tragedy strikes and his daughters Iris (Ambyr Childers, ‘The Master’) and Rose (Julia Garner, ‘Martha Marcy May Marlene’) are forced to assume responsibilities that extend beyond those of a typical family. As the unrelenting downpour continues to flood their small town, the local authorities begin to uncover clues that bring them closer to the secret that the Parkers have held closely for so many years.
January 14, 2014:
Carrie
A re-imagining of the classic horror tale about Carrie White (Chloe Grace Moretz), a shy girl outcast by her peers and sheltered by her deeply religious mother (Julianne Moore), who unleashes telekinetic terror on her small town after being pushed too far by her peers at their senior prom.
Riddick
‘Riddick’, the latest chapter of the groundbreaking saga that began with 2000’s hit sci-fi film ‘Pitch Black’ and 2004’s ‘The Chronicles of Riddick’ reunites writer/director David Twohy (‘A Perfect Getaway’, ‘The Fugitive’) and star Vin Diesel (the Fast and Furious franchise, ‘xXx’). Diesel reprises his role as the antihero Riddick, a dangerous, escaped convict wanted by every bounty hunter in the known galaxy.
Voodoo Possession
A man travels to a Haitian insane asylum in search of his missing brother and discovers that all the inmates and the hospital administrator are seemingly possessed by a voodoo spirit.
“Voodoo Possession” has one of the coolest opening scenes that I have watched in a long time.
You’re Next
‘You’re Next’ reinvents the genre by putting a fresh twist on home-invasion horror. When a gang of masked, ax-wielding murderers descend upon the Davison family reunion, the hapless victims seem trapped… until an unlikely guest of the family proves to be the most talented killer of all… and she is awesome.
January 21, 2014:
Black Water Vampire
Faux documentary about a group of young documentary filmmakers set off to uncover the true story behind the Black Water murders, a series of brutal killings where women were found dumped in the woods, savagely slain, with their mutilated bodies completely drained of blood.
January 28, 2014:
Argento’s Dracula 3D
Horror master Dario Argento returns with a bloody, luridly creepy 3D version of the classic vampire tale, drenched in gore and sex. An unsuspecting Englishman arrives in Transylvania, lured by a job with a local nobleman. But the undead Count Dracula’s real target is the man?’s innocent young wife. Featuring the iconic Rutger Hauer as vampire hunter Van Helsing and the inimitable Asia Argento (the director’s own daughter) as a local all-too-eager to fall under the Count’s sway.
Dark Touch
At night, an isolated house deep in the countryside takes on a monstrous life of its own.
Objects and furniture run riot against the inhabitants, leaving 11-year-old Neve the only survivor of a bloody massacre that destroys the bodies of her parents and culminates in the death of her little brother, Ciaran.
I Will Follow You Into the Dark
Sophia Monet is lost and apathetic after the recent death of her parents. She finds herself reeling in a state of cynicism and fear of the unknown until she meets the refreshingly charismatic Adam. He begins to ignite in Sophia a sense of purpose, giving meaning to her once empty life. Late one night, Sophia awakens to find Adam missing, the bed spattered with blood. Along with Adam’s roommate Astrid, and a couple friends, Sophia frantically searches the labyrinth of Adam’s dilapidated apartment high-rise building to find him. Sophia and the group soon find themselves up against unseen paranormal forces that will stop at nothing to keep Adam from being found. Sophia must confront her personal demons and take an extraordinary leap of faith in order to bring him back.
Metallica Through the Never
Award-winning filmmaker Nimród Antal (Predators, Kontroll) creates a groundbreaking 3D motion picture event, ‘Metallica Through the Never’. The music-driven feature film combines a bold narrative and spectacular live-performance footage of one of the most popular and influential rock bands in history to produce a bracing, raw and visceral cinematic experience. Emerging young star Dane DeHaan (‘The Place Beyond the Pines’, ‘Kill Your Darlings’, ‘The Amazing Spider-Man 2’) portrays Trip, a young roadie sent on an urgent mission during Metallica’s roaring live set in front of a sold-out arena.
