Well I had the opportunity to see Turmion Kätilöt (TK) again but this time in a small venue here in Kuopio, Finland at Henry’s Pub. I was asked to come and cover the show by Bobby Undertaker the guitarist of the band but had my bike stolen. So needless to say I was afraid I was not going to be able to attend. However at the last moment I was able to get a free ride there and back and arrive about 20 minutes before the band took the stage…or I should say 20 minutes before all hell broke loose.
Turmion Kätilöt has a very strong presence here in Finland and it’s not uncommon for them to sell out shows at larger venues than at Henry’s Pub. Well, as their reputation dictates…the place was packed. As a photographer I knew this was going to be bad news. I try to, politely, get as close to the front as possible and managed to get just behind the people in the front. Luckily, TK have a lot of female fans and I was taller than most in the front…except for the one DIRECTLY in front of. I’m not sure if it was female or not to be honest…all I know I kept getting whips of dandruff hair in my face as the band played as they head banged the dandruff out of their hair.
Anyway, I wait and try to position myself as best as possible for when the band takes the stage. It should be noted that this is not a typical TK show because this is also a CD release party for their new album ‘Technodiktator’ which just released on the 27th of September. So the show and fans are going to be extra crazy…I brace for impact. The band takes the stage…and the bodies of people bounce me around like pinball.
TK is a very…interesting band I should say. Their live shows have been known to include a lot of S&M motifs and what I guess could be called torture porn or something. For me, I have yet to see anything TOO graphic at their shows but I have seen online images…and luckily I have refrained from clawing my eyes. I assume they reserve some of the craziness for those weirdo freaks in Helsinki!!! Haha! (I.e. sticking wooden poles up their butts?!? True False?) (I.e. some dude on stage deep throating a dildo?!?! True.)
Aside from the bizarre stage theatrics the band puts on an entertaining and energetic live performance and they are hometown heroes here in Kuopio. Alas, for their second song they played one of their most popular songs, ‘Grand Ball’ and my ass got bounced out of the front part of the crowd which basically ended my photo opportunity for the evening…even though it was not in good shape to begin with. The place got so packed out I couldn’t even get to a spot to watch the show and had to sit in a side room. That’s ok though, as the crowd who paid good money to see them deserve to see Turmion Kätilöt on their special night to celebrate ‘Technodiktator’ which seems to be getting positive feedback from the fans.
All and all the show was fantastic, what I got to see of it, and the new material is doing well and getting good press.  If you get the chance to see TK, do so…just try to watch out for dildo swallowing and dandruff hair slinging.
