James Wan’s The Conjuring finished in first place at the box office, earning an estimated $41.5 million to easily beat blockbuster competition Red 2, R.I.P.D. and Turbo in their opening weekends. The Conjuring had a modest budget of only $20 million.
James Wan’s last haunted house film, Insidious, was considered a hit two years ago, but The Conjuring crushed its $13.3 million opening and should pass its $54 million total within the week. In fact, The Conjuring’s $41.5 million debut is the second-biggest supernatural (i.e., ghosts and demons) horror opening of all time, trailing only Paranormal Activity 3.
