Review-Sway is the seventh record by Blue October which their music in the last few years since Approaching Normal, has been getting less heavy and more softer. Which some fans noticed heavily on Any Man in America, which some fans were letdown there were no Hate Me’s or Razorblade’s. Other fans were more open, and I feel those are the fans who will really embrace this more atmospheric, lush and softer sound that this cd showcases. Gone is the balance between the heavy and melodic, and in its place is a record that can be seen as almost a “feel good” record which goes off in heavy directions only twice, by a band that has made a history of making lyrics that sound like a patient yelling at their therapist. Let’s be honest, bands have to grow, whether we the fans like that growth or not, but some bands when they grow, they seem to get better. Blue October is a band that I feel this growth is a little rushed, but I am open to it. Angels in Everything is such a radio friendly pop song, that you almost feel like they summoned their inner Counting Crows. This song sounds so much like 90’s alternative pop, that it is hard to believe that Blue October would try it. It has the catchy chorus and sing along lyrics with the pop guitar sound, that is part of the growth that I am skeptical about. Things We Don’t Know About sounds like the anti-Hate Me. I feel if this song has exposure could be a hit for them in the same way Hate Me was. I feel it should have the same impact on new fans who never heard of the band or fans who are unsure after the last record. Songs like Things We Do At Night is a heavy song, which I feel with the background vocals really captures a true beauty to that song, that was easily the best song I heard by this band since Say It. Put It In though I know people are going to be happy that they did a second heavy song on this cd, but that song just felt out of place, like it belonged on a different cd. All in all, the band has a passion and energy all over this cd that is infectious, but I miss the days of History for Sale and Foiled, and want more of that Blue October. But, this is a good little record that I feel diehard fans may be on the fence with this direction, but new fans may be the target audience and would dig it if they never heard anything else by the band. Lyric wise they still create some great songs, and all the guys really shine on this cd, but I am on the fence about this growth, but I think the more I listen to this cd, the more I will accept it more.
