Los Angeles, California based black metal / post metal band Averse Concept is a band that I am expecting to hear a lot about in the coming years simply based from the quality of their “Symbol of Loss” EP. While the EP was originally self-released in 2011, we now have a more widespread release. Musically, Averse Concept is up there with the top tier bands. Their guitar tone is dirty, but sharp and the drumwork is up to the task of keeping the songs in check.
With four songs and a short instrumental, “Symbol of Loss” is only a small sampling of music of 24:30, but it is enough to keep the band in your mind and hope for more soon. All four songs are pretty intense, so it is very tough to pick a standout, but the closing track, Clouded Recovery, is a nice song with many black metal elements including blastbeats and droning riffs. The remainder of the songs are very good as well with some star studded riffs.
The main weakness to the EP, unfortunately, are the vocals. They are a black metal / hardcore mix, which does deter from the album a little, but it is still a very solid listen.
