Metal Review: U.D.O. | Steelhammer (2013)

U.D.O. Steelhammer

Purchase U.D.O. Steelhammer

German powerhouse band U.D.O., fronted by ex-Accept legend Udo Dirkschneider is back for their 14th metal ride with the release of “Steelhammer.” It is hard to believe that the raspy-vocaled demon Dirkschneider is still making solid music with a neverending passion, but the man never seems to age and his voice has not changed since day one.

“Steelhammer” is just another classic metal force of an album with thrash metal riffs all over the place. Melodic lines like heard in Time Keeper and Devil’s Bite make the sound similar to many other bands of this ilk, but it is the vocals of Udo Dirkschneider that makes it unmistakeably U.D.O. From the opening title track, Steelhammer, the album kicks it into high gear with tons of riffs and power.

Metal Machine is an anthemic piece of classic metal that you will shout from the rooftops. Devil’s Bite ends up being an awesome song although the beginning is quite sketchy. It ends up being a very melodic, powerful song with some exquisite keyboard riffs to power it through. Death Ride is a straight up speed metal ride. that never relents. Time Keeper is a track that has a sound that been synonymous with the U.D.O. sound for years.

Overall, “Steelhammer” is powerful and, as expected, even when U.D.O. strays from their normal path, they are still kicking ass.
