Cerná is a post-black metal outfit founded in Kalamazoo, Michigan in 2011 by Cody McCoy of ambient prog exhibitionists The Omega Experiment. “Restoring Life” is an instrumental release that is layered with sound and atmosphere. We do not get many albums like this that are actually successful, so when one comes around that works, I get very excited.
First and foremost, you have to be in the mood for something like this. Albums like this are ambient, but very dark in nature, so you must mentally prepare yourself for what is to come. As you listed to each track weave into the next, you cannot help but start to paint an atmospheric portrait in your head about what Cerná is trying to say with the music. The sounds are filled with despair, but with a glimmer of hope. This is definitely my cup of tea when I am in the mood for music that you can lose yourself in. Sometimes, you do not need to headbang, but rather just want to mellow out.
The album is solid throughout, but surprisingly, my favorite two tracks are the closing two tracks on “Restoring Life” entitled Restoring Life and Isa, which are bonus tracks on my release. The latter track, Isa, is simply astounding in its 5 minute finale to the journey that we just took.
Overall, “Restoring Life” comes highly recommended for post-black metal fans.
