Finland’s Lordi is back with a revamped line-up and their first new album since “Babez For Breakfast” entitled To Beast or Not to Beast. Lordi is more well known for their costume and shenanigans than their actual music, but I have always been a backer of this band because they have a nice sound.
To Beast or Not to Beast hits you right in the face with the opening track We’re Not Bad For the Kids (We’re Worse). It is a pretty mediocre song to say the least, but it is typical Lordi with the sarcastic approach to metal, but a different sound to it. The album starts to open up a little with the second track I Luv Ugly, which sounds like the Lordi that we are used to. I Luv Ugly has the powerful chorus and a great bridge section along with some nice metal riffs.
Throughout the rest of the record, Lordi shows off their influences such as the Alice Cooper-like track The Riff. Something Wicked This Way Comes shows their appreciation of mid-era Black Sabbath. The KISS tones appear all over the album.
There are a few duds on the album, but that can be said for most Lordi releases. As long as Lordi concentrates on the riffs, they are okay in my book.
