Metallica is one of those bands that people love to hate these days. While I am not a huge fan of much of what they did after …And Justice For All, I could never deny the impact that they had on me and on metal itself. Their early releases are seminal pieces of metal history that cannot be denied.
Below is my dream Metallica setlist, but make no mistake about it. I absolutely hate James Hetfield’s voice live anymore, so this is not a show that I am dying to see. His old raspy growl is gone replaced with a bunch of monotonous tones and constant attempts at hitting notes that he has no business attempting.
Fight Fire With Fire
Master of Puppets
For Whom the Bell Tolls
Fade to Black
Harvester of Sorrow
Welcome Home (Sanitarium)
The Thing That Should Not Be
Ride the Lightning
Am I Evil?
The Four Horsemen
Right off the bat, people will doubt my selection to open the show – Fight Fire With Fire. This song is absolutely brutal and would get the crowd fired up right off the bat. Just to enforce that point, we would follow with three more classics that are staples of their current live shows anyway. Songs like Fade to Black need to be part of their regular shows again as should be The Thing That Should Not Be and Leper Messiah.
The newest track on this list is The Black Album’s intro track Enter Sandman, but I was tempted to add The Outlaw Torn. Enter Sandman would lead right into the encores which features staples of their typical live set.
All in all, this setlist is probably not much of a stretch, but was not easy to do either.
