10 Reasons To Watch Game of Thrones

HBO has given us exquisite and hooking series over the years such as The Sopranos, Entourage, True Blood, Sex and the City, Flight of the Concords, Six Feet Under, The Wire, and Carnivale. Game of Thrones just may be the best series I’ve seen from HBO, so far. Hopefully, they have enough money to keep the show going, unlike Carnivale. Game of Thrones has become a huge success. Everyone and their mother are tuning in each week to see what happens next. You are forced to pay attention and watch the episodes more than once due to the overwhelming amount of characters to keep up with and story lines. It’s the kind of show you watch over and over again like listening to a favorite album. The show is based off of the popular novel series A Game of Thrones written by George R. R. Martin, published in 1996. I haven’t read many fantasy novels but incest and pushing young boys down high windows is not often present in these types of books which is why HBO was the best for taking over the series. I just cannot see any of this being PG13 or on the WB for that matter. The scripts are well written and even though I haven’t read the novels, I have been told by many viewers that they did a magnificent job transitioning the series. Some might find themselves lost in the story and some might find themselves looking at the back of their eye lids due to short attention spans. However, those with half a brain and an interest in medieval times might find themselves addicted and craving for more each week. If you find yourself doubtful, at least go over this list I have compiled for why you should give the series your attention.

1. Great Story Telling

The story centers around seven noble families fighting for the iron throne. King of Westeros wants Lord Eddard Stark to serve as hand of the King even though the previous hand was executed. Stark takes the King’s offer and plans to investigate further. Meanwhile, the Queen and her calamitous family are plotting to take complete control. Across the sea we have the last members of the previous ruling family, the Targaryens, and they want their right to the throne. Ancient evils are afoot along with political stew, war, and sexual intrigue. The Starks, Lannisters, Baratheons, Greyjoys, Tullys, Arryns, and Tyrells all fight for the iron throne.

2. The Characters.

Characterization is crucial and certainly one of the best things Game of Thrones has going for it. My personal favorites happen to be Arya Stark, Tyrion Lannister, and Daenerys Targaryen also known as Khaleesi. Khaleesi has long silver hair and she’s the mother of dragons. No really, she has dragon children. I cannot wait to see how this plays out with her also wanting to sit on the Iron Throne.

Arya Stark is the Tomboyish daughter of Lord Eddard (Ned Stark) and Lady Catelyn. She dreams that she is a direwolf, but so do her siblings. Arya is quite the little warrior and even has a Needle (sword) as a gift from her bastard brother Jon Snow. Her father arranges for her to have practice with the sword so she can widen her badassery.

Tyrion Lannister is easily my favorite character. Intelligent and seductive dwarfs are not what I expected. This little man gets lots of vagina and I mean hot vagina. As much as you HATE the entire Lannister family, you root for this little man. He’s the youngest of the Lannister family and he may be a tiny man but I fear for any character that wrongs this little man. Tyrion is easily able to overcome the prejudice he faces as a dwarf and he’s able to out smart any man. The casting directors must have spent a lot of time finding the right actors for these roles as the ones they have selected are perfect for the part. The acting is impeccable.

3. Cinematography and Scenery

It took five cinematographers to capture season two. It’s the cinematographers job to capture the perfect shot onto film. This includes how to frame the shot, lens work, pans and zooms, and lighting. Most of the show was filmed in the Northern Ireland, Scotland, Croatia, Iceland and Morocco. Such beautiful scenery. The Icelandic scenery may be my favorite.

4. Dragons, Wolves, and White Walkers

Dragons are so cool. This shouldn’t be a nerd thing. Why would anyone not think dragons are cool? So far we have only seen baby dragons but this may make future episodes pretty damn interesting. Any scene with the white walkers makes my list as well for best scenes but there are too few scenes that feature these mysterious creatures. We do not know enough about them except that they are real and have been silent for 8,000 years. The dire wolves go along with the amazing story telling. Each of the Stark children get their own wolf that grows in to fiercely loyal protectors of their master. Top that off with a priestess giving birth to a shadow creature of some sorts, a total WTF moment if you ask me. I am excited to see what other creatures are introduced.

5. Copious Amounts of Sexual Content

Admit it, you like sex as much as the next person. There’s almost as much sex in Game of Thrones as there is in True Blood. There’s girl on girl action and boy on boy. This is balanced out with plenty of heterosexuality. It’s funny that we see no hair on the armpits, legs, or mustaches.

6. The Violence

Gore fans will love Game of Thrones. There are plenty of beheadings, throat slitting, tongues ripped out, and heart consumption.

7. The Lannister’s Always Pay Their Debts.

As much as I hate The Lannister’s, I don’t want to see them lose in the battle. Isn’t that odd? I think it must be because of my love and admiration for the little man. I don’t want to see him hurt! I wouldn’t mind seeing Joffrey’s head on a spike. Not only is he a total pussy, he is a complete cunt as well. I want to see very bad things happen to this young lad and his mother Queen Cersei is a total harlot that has an incestuous relationship with her good looking brother Jamie.  That’s right, incest! You cannot help but feel sorry for this woman. She may be a rotten human being but one thing is for sure, she loves her children. She dreams of her son Joffrey becoming a King even though he is a complete sociopath. The Stark’s are in my favor but the Lannister’s and their fucked up story keeps me intrigued.

8. The Battles

We have only gotten to see a couple of epic battle scenes but the season finale for the second season gave us a pretty entertaining battle to watch. I wont spoil it for you. Just know, it is epic. From start to finish there are constant sword fights, starting with the attack by the white walkers in the very first episode.

9. Constant Surprises

All bets are off when it comes to the characters on this show. I don’t know how closely they are following the books but in the show they are willing to kill off main characters, babies, and young children. Not only will they kill of children and your favorite characters, they will keep it on display for you. All the heads are placed on spikes and children’s crispy burnt bodies are strung up. I am not saying this is a reason to watch the show. I simply meant that you never know what is going to happen next. Honestly, dead babies are too much for me. I almost started crying in that scene.

10. Because I said so!
