The Wicked Channel interview with Jessica Cameron plus some autographed swag to giveaway…

Before we start this week’s interview. Here is a message to you guys from J-Cam herself. “LOVE YOU! Thank you for all your help and endless support – I really do appreciate it more then you will ever know.
XOXOXOOXOXOXOXOXOXOOXOX
J”
Do I need to say anything else..this is Jessica Cameron enjoy..Also, Question 2 is not directed to respectable sites like Nerd Remix, who have a respect for who they interview and feature. This question is to a few sites who stole the concept of having a hottie or hot guy of the month to steal a fanbase from who they talk about, and have no idea about anything they do or what they been in.

1. How did you get your first break in film?

I went to an audition for The Dead Matter – where everyone loved my audition and then…. I DID NOT GET THE ROLE!
Yup – true story.
Well technically I ended up with the role I was originally auditioning for (which was just a small featured extra role), but when in the audition they (the director and producers) decided to have me read for the lead….so of course THAT is the role I wanted. The producers even asked me for my availability. I thought the role was mine. Reality check – I had no resume, no experience outside of evening or weekend acting classes so lets be honest….there is no way anyone in their right mind would cast me in the lead for a feature film.
In the end I was offered the featured extra role, and knowing that there are no small roles I accepted it, and I had so much fun on that set that I knew I had to do more! So I vowed to do everything in my power to ensure that from that point forward I would not miss out on any role I wanted.
Side note – the wonderful actress who was cast in the lead looked so much like me that when I was on set several people approached me to ask me about my previous work, so it was quite gut wrenching to have to correct them, repeatedly!
But I learned on that set that I really want to do this, so I did it!

2.One of the things that offends me is, how some website uses actors and actresses to promote the site, and that the actor or actresses seems sort of a after thought. Like this thing called Hottie of the Month, or Sex Symbol of the month. That unlike some respectable sites who do this in taste, and featuring a good interview. These other sites take this concept and use it to lure your fans with bs 5th grade questions and almost X rated pictures of the person. Were they post these photos that are more for getting people to notice your body and the site, more than noticing your true talent. When you get these kind of requests, do you roll your eyes and say..sure whatever, you idiots probably cannot name two of my films, much less know who I am. You just see my fan base and think it could help you out?

I really appreciate how direct that you are since I am also direct.
Honestly when websites that constantly support me do it – I am honored to be involved and try to get them original photos to help. I mean its only fair if they are promoting me ALL The time, then I can at least return the favor!
However when websites that never bother to contact me attempt to do it I just politely refuse. There is a BIG difference between supporting each other and exploiting one another.
But since its all part of being in a public job, I try to take it all with a grain of salt.

3.What is on the Jessica Cameron ipod?

I do not own an ipod. Or an MP3 player…
But I do need to get one! So recommendations of what I should put on it when I get one please let me know.

(James – I don’t believe I received a birthday gift from you…hint hint hint)

4.What do you think the biggest misconception of Jessica Cameron is?

Gosh there are so many….
That I have a glamorous life – the reality is many days are spent on my laptop in my pj’s (like right now as I write this article).
Sure pictures from film sets, photo shoots and red carpets are posted online of me in which I am smiling with my hair and make up perfectly done…thats simply just because I never post the pic of me at home by myself.
Or the fact that some people think what I do is easy – the truth is when you are good at what you do it often looks easy from the outside but lets be clear here and now. Being a full time actress is by far the hardest career I have ever had, and outside of dealing with my parents deaths the most challenging and difficult part of my life. Don’t get me wrong – the rewards are so worth the struggle, but its the farthest thing from easy!
And one of my favorite misconceptions is that I have had anything handed to me – that’s simply a lie. I have had to work my butt off for everything that I have gotten, and guess what I have a crazy amount of work left to do to get to where I want to go. But I am going all the way, no matter how hard it is to get there!

5.What do you enjoy more and why…Being on TV series, being in a music video, tv commercials, working on shorts or being the first person to die in most of your horror films…which also means working on full length films?

Well… the pay checks on the commercial sets are the best but my heart is in films and tv. I love crafting a character that is totally different from me. Its so much fun to step into another persons life, their experiences, their passions, their interests, etc and take the trip that is on the page.
For me that is why I love my job. I get to do so many things in front of the camera that I would/could never do in real life! Its exciting when you can portray the character to a level that can please an audience. Making the unbelievable/impossible seem real is the most challenging and yet fulfilling job I have ever had. Its not just my passion, its my life.

6.What is more of a career goal at this point…Being a well respected actress and landing that ” big name” project or maybe settling down and having a family?

Definitely my career is taking priority at this point in my life. Don’t get me wrong I would love to find a special someone and consider starting a family but I am not going to hold my breath waiting for that to happen.
Certainly with the recent passing of my parents I have been missing that family aspect of my world, so perhaps one day I will have that again. In the mean time I am blessed to have a career that I adore.
In matters of major life changes I tend to go with the flow – if its meant to be then it will be. I would rather not force anything.
Its interesting when you think about it – I take a very active role in my career path, and my personal life just sort of seems to unfold as fate decides. Of course I would like for a fairy tale romance, complete with a handsome prince on a white horse, but I am realistic and understand that there are virtually no horses in LA! And certainly no princes, however there does seem to be a greater amount of frogs…..hmmmmm…..

7.Do you get star struck on movie sets? Like for example, on Camel Spiders…” Holy hell it is C Thomas Howell, I loved you in Hitcher way back in 1986″ That may not be the best example…

Ha – you picked an example that never actually happened : )
On Camel Spiders the story line that I was a part of was shot in Indiana while the other story line that C Thomas Howell was a part of the California shoot.
But have met many successful people and nope, I never get star struck. Even before I started working in the business they were all just regular people to me. After working in the business that point has become all the more apparent – actors/director/etc are all just working folk like the store clerk working at the gas station, or the car mechanic working at the shop. They go to work, do their job to the best of their abilities, try to not piss anyone off and go home.

8.You have worked with a who’s who in indie film. ( which we will get to later) At this point is there anyone, you want to work with that you have not yet?

There are so many people that I want to work with and many that I would like to work with again!
In no particular order….
Tammi Sutton – a hot female director who makes films that men watch. We need more women like her in film and in real life! Her last film “Isle of Dogs” won best feature at the Shriekfest film festival and is simply amazing.
Pearry Teo and Chad Ward – these guys have the most twisted minds, and I mean that in the most beautiful way.
Declan O’brien – LOVED Wrong Turn 4 and looking forward to seeing the latest one!
James Wan – huge fan ever since I saw the first Saw film.
Dan Krige – loved “Redd Inc.” so very much, and I would be honored to work with him.
Sean Decker, Eric England, Zack Parker, Brett and Drew Pierce, my dear friends Dave Reda and many more.

9. You told me one of your favorite horror films is Martyrs..What do you feel about Hollywood and even the indies remaking all these horror films? And before you answer it, if they offered you a role in Martyrs the American version..would you accept?

If I was offered a role in the remake of one of my favorite films – I would accept it for no other reason then hoping that I could make it as good as it could be. It would be very difficult, but I would rather be involved then not. (Side bar – its my friends buddy who is re-writing Martyrs, so its going to happen…)
Hollywood makes what theater goers go and see. That being said I think that there are some films that should be remade – those films that technology would add a new aspect to or those that are so old they are worth modernizing.
I am actually getting ready to shoot a cameo in a remake that I am really excited about. This is the first that I am talking about it, so you are getting the inside scoop!
I have a small cameo role in Silent Night, it is currently being directed by Stephen C.Miller up in Winnipeg and will be my first Canadian film (I am a Canadian citizen, but have only worked in the USA until now). It stars some great talent including Malcolm McDowell and Jamie King and I am so happy to be a part of it!
You will be able to see it in theaters everywhere this coming Christmas! Stay tuned, its going to get bloody!

10. This is name association. I give you a name and you tell me the first thing that comes to mind.

a.Christina Rose – Who? (ok after checking IMDB she is an actress that I worked with briefly on Death of The Dead. She didn’t really chat with me much so I don’t have much to say about her.)
b.Christina DeRosa..btw did she mention my name when you see her, she has a huge crush on me and loves what I do -
who? (ok after checking IMDB she is my upcoming co star in the film Huntingdon. I have not met her yet – but I have heard good things about her and look forward to meeting her)
c.Tiffany Shepis – Hilarious, wildly entertaining and a KICK ASS person. Tiffany knows me from the convention circuit (I obviously know her from her films too) and she went out of her way to write me the most touching note when my father died.
d.Kitsie Duncan – LOVE This woman. Serious she is an amazing woman, mother, actress, etc. Not to mention just a great person. I worked with her and her hubby on Mother’s Blood and had so much fun! I want to move in with them, seriously if she would adopt me I might consider retiring!
e.Cameron Scott – lover of the horror genre.
f.Danille Harris…did she mention my name when you met her, she has a crush on me and is a huge Wicked Channel fan and loves what I do..
Shy and quiet. I have met her a few times, she always seems very nice. I am certain that she has no idea who I am and would have to check my IMDB.

(BTW – I love that YOU misspelled her name : ) )

(BTW Jessica, that is what she told me I could call her-James)

11. I know you do the conventions, what is the weirdest request a fan asked of you?

I seem to have some fans who have foot fetishes – so I get asked a lot for photos of my feet. I have also had a fan beg me for a pair of my shoes that I no longer wanted…
I try not to ask questions in these situations, just nod and smile…
But since I love my shoes, I would never give them away! Never, ever!

12.Will we see Jessica Cameron doing a reality show like Scream Queens,The Bachelor,The Canadian Jersey Shore or Flavor of Love?

Well…you will not see me doing any of the above FOR SURE! I mean I am already working more then every actress who has ever been on Scream Queens, probably combined even. The other shows that you listed where women in particular make a fool of themselves hold no interest for me either. I try to maintain composer and dignity at all times, and I would never lie and tell you that I was always 100% successful with that, I will say that at least cameras are not around when I slip a bit…
And besides some of them don’t even pay you (i.e. The Bachelor)!! Isn’t that nuts! So you have to take off weeks from your job sometimes even months to be a part of a tv show that makes a lot of money and yet never get paid.
Now all the above aside – I have signed on to my very first show and it is a “reality show”.
A fun fact that only my best fans will know is that I actually studied fashion design in University – so I get to be a wedding dress consultant on this season on Brides Of Beverly Hills. More info on this project to come soon!

13.Do you think reality stars are a insult to the business?

I think that they are not all actors , but not an insult to the business. To me they are just a necessary evil : )
For me it is insulting when “reality tv stars” call themselves actors, just because you are on tv does not make you an actor.
I mean – I unclog my sink when it gets clogged yet you don’t see me calling myself a plumber!

14.On The Dead Matter, you worked briefly with Tom Savini and Andrew Divoff… were they accessable for the others to talk to and get to ask advice to? Did Andrew break into Wishmaster during filming and Savini hand his resume to anyone who looked like a opportunity? Also on this topic, you worked on Cut with Tony Todd and Kane Hodder, were they accessable to cast and crew to talk to and get advice?

They were all so very nice! Extremely easy to chat with. Andy met me briefly the first day I was on set. I came back like a week later, and totally expected him to forget who I was and he remembered my name and everything! Although sadly he did not break into The WIshmaster while filming, I wish he had since I LOVE That series! But alas he did not. He was super cool, just not THAT cool! ; )
HA HA ….oh Tom. I did not see Tom hand out his resume, however one of the unknown actors gave everyone on set a signed headshot as a thank you gift at the end of the production (true story) and Jason Carter gave the important people action figures…I was not important enough at the time to get one….
Tony Todd and Kane Hodder worked a week that I was not on set for, so I did not get to hang with them. However I heard great things from those on set who did!

15..You were in a music video for Mushroomhead for Saw IV, how did this come about? Did you audition for the film as well?

Sadly I did not get to audition for the film. I know the director of the music video David Greathouse (who worked on The Dead Matter) and he asked me to do it. I loved the films, and the concept and when I was told that I would get to decapitate a man, well I was sold! (Note – I cut my rates when I get to torture men in my work ; ) ) It was also shot at one of my favorite places – Pricinct 13 (which is a wonderful Special effects studio in Ohio). If I am driving near I always stop in since the crew at Pricinct 13 is always up to something fun and gory!

16.Let’s talk Camel Spiders…Roger Corman presents coming to home video March 28th..directed by Jim Wynorski. Now Jim had this documentary about him called Popatopolis. In this documentary which he gave his blessing to the final cut, painted him in a pretty bad light as being a very tough director on his actors and wanting the most for less. Did Roger Corman ever come on the set or is this just him in name only? And how was working with Jim?

So Roger was brought on AFTER the film was completed – so I did not get to meet him.
Everything you have ever heard about Jim Wynorski (good or bad) is completely 110% true. I mean that in the best of ways. He is vocal, loud, sometimes offensive, has no filter between his mouth and his brain, rude, but WOW can he make a low budget film! I actually worked very well with him since I am a no-nonsense kinda girl myself I appreciated how direct he was to myself and others on set. He knows exactly what he wants, what will sell and he is going to get it – whatever means necessary!

17.If you had to fill out a dating form, how would you describe yourself?

So my friend, Beth K actually made me sign up for match.com before. After she met her now husband on there, they convinced me to let them make me a profile. I agreed if they made the actually profile since I hate filling out that shit! So Beth and her hubby made me a perfect, lady like, profile – and it was charming, witty and way more perfect then I actually am. It was quite entertaining going on dates and having the men quote my perfect profile, only to have me tell them the truth that I actually did not write it nor have not read it….
Now some of the dates I went on, well that’s a whole article on to itself!!!!

18.I know the feedback from your latest The Sleeper is very positive. A few critics have even voiced an opinion that after all these films, why no Hollywood roles for Jessica Cameron yet. Even Justin has been so supportive and positive about you as well. Do you feel an anger or depression that you keep paying your dues and you have not landed that ” breakout of indies” role yet?

Honestly I never look at it that way. Truth be told that I don’t even know if I care to “break out of indies”. So long as I get to work on great projects with great people who the hell cares if its an indy film or not? I try to be proactive with my career – so I don’t get angered or depressed about it. If I have a problem with my career I just fix it, I would rather put my energy into solving the problem as opposed to perpetuating it. (so no you will not find me laying next to a pool daily complaining about how I can’t get work, I am out there making sure that I do!)
Side note – I just adore Justin and I had so much fun on that set! Such a great project!

19..What was the last Jessica Cameron film you watched?

Ironically I hate watching myself on screen – so I try to leave when my scenes are on.
I force myself to watch my auditions when I tape them, since I edit them myself usually, but even that is difficult for me.
However with all the press for my recent film Camel Spiders I did indeed watch it, and I thought it was quite the entertaining spider flick : ) I was happy with the end result.

20.What was the last film you went to the movie theater to see? Did you pay? I would love to be in the box office working and Jessica Cameron comes up and asks for a movie ticket.

Yes – I am so lucky that I get invited to lots of screenings and such. So I rarely pay for tickets. I just saw film that I was SUPER EXCITED about, “Redd Inc.”. This film is still finalizing its American distribution, but if you get a chance to see it you simply MUST! Its a mandatory watch for every horror fan. Its one of the most original horror films that I have seen. Dan Krige directed it and starred in it too – something that is so challenging and he did it effortlessly. I can not wait to see what he does next (and hopefully be a part of it!). I will pay to see it again when it hits theaters, and I encourage you all to as well!

21.Do you ever sleep? You go from one movie set to another in a matter of minutes, how can you memorize so many scripts? You have worked on almost a film a week for 2 years?

Ha – I try to get 6 hours a night. That’s all I have time for. Some days I get less (tonight I will get about 4), but 6 hours is a realistic hope. My goal is always to research my character and work with the script to an extent that I don’t need to memorize my lines per say. I am just living the life of the character as its written and the lines flow naturally. If the writing is good and I do my homework then its not a struggle. Yes – I have been so blessed to have worked on so many great projects, I am doing everything in my power to ensure that it continues.

22..On movie sets, if an actor or actress has no talent..do you call them out in front of everyone or do you talk to the director in private?

I would never want to embarrass anyone – and it would not help the set to make an actor feel self conscious of themselves. So no I would not call them out in front of anyone.
I try to do as much research as possible for all my films – so that I know who I am working with. In the past I have worked with some less experienced actors, and I try to reach out to my co stars as early as possible once contracts are locked and make sure that whatever relationship we are to have on camera we start as early as possible. I will also try to work with the actor and try to run the scenes as often as needed to pull out as good of a performance as possible.
There have been a few times when the other actors/actresses in the scenes are so bad that in the final edit I have way more screen time then originally planned – which is quite frankly fine with me!

23.Do you think the internet gives way too many people way too much freedom? That people who do not deserve a voice have one.

Not at all – I think everyone deserves to have a voice. Now just because everyone deserves to be able to have their own voice, does not mean I have to listen to it. We are all also blessed with our own ears and can choose to turn them away at will.
I do think that some people let it inflate their egos and I think that is unfortunate.
I can not imagine not having the internet and the freedom that it brings, its such a crucial part of my world now.

24.You probably see many links to films you been in. Do you read the reviews? If so, do you let the negative get to you?
I do read the reviews – especially when they are done by my friends : )

Nope – when I see a bad review I move past it. If there is constructive criticism then I try to learn and grow from it, but if it is done with an obvious malicious intent I ignore it. People who write those do not deserve one minute of my time.

25.Do you get recognized outside of conventions and movie sets? Like if you are shopping at the local Target and someone says ” Holy shit, you are Jessica Cameron and you look around and say..” Oh I must be”

Very rarely outside of the film and horror worlds. Its so random and odd when it happens, that I am quite happy to not have to deal with it! Don’t get me wrong, when it happens I am honored and feel blessed but it feels very weird. I mean I have been the same person for my entire life, so to know have this public job, well its an adjustment for sure.

26.You are at a convention, there is a booth..It is you, and Justin Russell..you get a fan who is so stoked to meet you guys and love your work..and they want you to sign their dvd and they give you an illegal burn of the film. What would you do?

I look to my director to give me direction, and then do whatever he tells me to : )
I did have a fan mail me a copy of a film that he found at a swap meet for me to sign, and it was an illegal burn. But since I was sure that he did not know this, and I believed that he indeed thought he was buying a legit copy I signed it and sent it back to him. But I did ask that in the future, if he could stick to buying the films new to help ensure that the copies were legit, I would REALLY appreciate it.

27.Jessica, this was a honor. Now is that time for you to promote what you got coming up for the fans..thanks so much…

Aww it was MY PLEASURE babe! I look forward to round 2!
