Review-Can you believe this year marks the 100th anniversary of Nikkatsu, Japan’s oldest film studio. As part of this celebration, Impulse Pictures are re-releasing the soft-core sex films from the 70’s and 80’s. The transfers are perfect, perfect sound and picture. The transfers alone would get a 10 out of 10. The Impulse Pictures DVD’s, sport a very attractive 1.85:1 anamorphic picture. While the movies certainly both look like they came from film the 1970’s and 1980s, the transfers shows almost no instances of physical imperfections, like scratches, dust and optical pops. Going into these two films, I learned some new things about myself. First off, I found out what a so called ” Pink” film was. In the mid 70’s to the early 80’s is when porn started to be big business in the US. I am assuming this was Japan’s answer to the American porn boom. Nikkatsu had to think of ways to attracted viewers to a mild porn film, so they brought in S&M. These films are good examples how you can push the boundaries of soft core into a more perverted feel that porn was not offering. Even more jaw dropping than the brutal S&M scenes in these films, are how these films are trying to be mainstream films. Also, that I may have more issues, then I originally thought.

Debauchery- felt like the sequel to Belle de Jour and the prequel to Breaking the Waves. With the only differences being, the brutality of things like beating, sex toys and the bondage scenes. This film is very intense, that at times you question if Ami is truly turned on or is she paralyzed by fear. This film felt like a very thought provoking sexual descent into sick perversions. You never know whether to feel for Ami, or that she is enjoying being a part of these sexual fantasies, while maybe living out some of hers as well. This film for its time has to be considered boundary pushing. Now, keep that in mind when we talk about the negatives. As much R rated sex and nudity is in this film, this film conforms to censorship very openly and badly. The females never show pubic hair, so if you are expecting full nudity, you will be let down. Though, some of these sex scenes are very graphic for the time, and I am shocked they were not cut or trimmed down. And somehow, the guys asses are blurred with some kind of gray cloud. And, that blur distracts the scene and makes the sex cheapened. You see a woman legs open and moaning and a gray cloud is over his ass and her body parts, it looked ridiculous. The movie manages to be shocking, erotic and very unique. This film is not a guilty pleasure, it is a perverted treat. Though, I hated the censoring of the sex scenes. If you are going this far into the porn abyss, why not just go full on? Or at least not censor what you are doing. Just do not do it if that is the case.

True Story of a Woman in Jail:Sex Hell- feels like they were trying to cash in on the Women in Prison craze, that was going on in the 70’s. Going into this film, all I knew about Pink Films, and Nikkatsu was Debauchery, which I was a big fan of. This film, even though it spawned two sequels, was not so good. It felt tame and so lazy that you just want give up on the characters and dialogue. I was in this film, to see if this film would offer anything in the field of shocking or controversial for its time. And I just thought that after watching Debauchery, that this was going to just blow me away. Sadly it did not. You get a decent amount of lesbian encounters, sexual situations and fights. Which were not erotic and came across as just annoying. The clay dildo masturbation scene should have been way better than it was. I mean think about what I am putting down so far, lesbian scenes, fighting and masturbation. You know this film had issues, if I can not even find good in the selling points. Though, I did like the fucked up forced miscarriage. Mayumi is our main character, who was wrongly incarcerated for the murder of her boyfriend’s mistress. And this film is all about how she wont play by the inmate ringleader Hiromi’s rules. Which involves another scene I was a fan of, in which she is held down and treated to a golden shower facial. Of course, you know she will have a way to escape. This just seemed like Nikkatsu, just threw together a film and did not even care to watch it themselves. If you are a fan of Nikkatsu and the Pink Films, you may like this film a little more than I did. I am new to this genre of film, and I just may have to watch more or maybe the other two sequels, and come back to this later. It did have a lot of hot japanese girls, and I wish it would have maybe sold nudity more and plot less. Again, no pubic hair or insertion. Which who knows, may have helped this film. This film felt like reading a japanese playboy magazine in 1975.
