Movie Review-Battle Royale ( blu ray)

This is not a typo..Battle Royale is coming to blu ray..and it will be on Tuesday March 20th

Plot-If you are into books like The Hunger Games, and maybe films like Steve Austin’s The Condemned and wondered where that concept originated from. Look no further, originally released at all Hot Topic Stores in a cool box set of dvds, it is now getting the Anchor Bay love. Which means, Blu ray. Fearful of their nation’s youth, the Japanese government passes The BR Law: Each year, a 9th grade class is sent to a remote island where they will be locked into exploding neck collars, given a random weapon, and forced to hunt and kill each other until there is only one survivor left.

Specs-Battle Royale” is being released in two incarnations, a film only DVD/ Blu-ray or “The Complete Collection” DVD/Blu-ray.

Film Only: This includes the Director’s Cut of the film.

Complete Collection (4 discs): The four discs are (1) Director’s Cut of the film (see above), (2) Theatrical Cut, (3) 2003’s “Battle Royale II” and (4) Bonus Content Disc.

Bonus Disc Content included in Complete Collection only. This is on a standard DVD even in the Blu-Ray set (but all three films are on Blu-ray). The Making Of Battle Royale, Battle Royale Press Conference, Instructional Video: Birthday Version, Audition & Rehearsal Footage, Special Effects Comparison Featurette, Tokyo International Film Festival 2000, Battle Royale Documentary, Basketball Scene Rehearsals, Behind-The-Scenes Featurette, Filming On-Set, Original Theatrical Trailer, Special Edition TV Spot, TV Spot: Tarantino Version. It’s a lot of Bonus Material, but it has been used on Special Edition International versions of the DVD and is not new to this set. Blu-Ray films have 1080p video and Dolby True HD 5.1 soundtracks.

Review-( this will be the film only version of the blu ray) In 2000, I went to my local bookstore and bought a Rue Morgue magazine that would change my life forever. On the cover was this image from Battle Royale. I read the article and had to see this film. I got a copy, and it blew me away. At that time, I have never seen a film that brutal, cruel and just graphic. This story is about a country run by a totalitarian government, which occasionally selects groups of teenagers to methodically kill each other. On TV. Until only one remains. A class of high-schoolers are being transported on a bus, when they are gassed to unconsciousness. When they awake, they have electronic collars around their necks. A former teacher named Kitano explains that they have been chosen for the B.R. Act, where teenagers are forced to fight each other to the death until only one is left standing.
If you don’t play, try to escape, refuse to kill or stray into a death zone, the collars explode. Each teenager is given food, water and a random item, and are set loose on a remote island. In 2004, Hot Topic started to sell this box set of Battle Royale. Again, I had to have it. With this box set, I got to see the second one which I refuse to call a sequel. It was just so awful. Last November, I heard a rumor that Battle Royale was finally coming to blu ray. My biggest fear was that a company would just non caring release it, or that it would get lost in the Hunger Games fuss as some wanna be clone film. I know the first question usually is, is it worth double dipping and owning the blu ray. My answer is easy..fuck yes. If you own that overpriced Hot Topic version, you are truly missing out. This has a few extra scenes that the Hot Topic version did not have, but also the picture and sound are so much more crisper and perfect. Along with The Alien box set, Dark Knight, Star Wars box set, and anything Pixar on blu ray..this is that must own, you need in your collection. To watch this on blu ray made the film seem new again. And new fans, if you never seen Battle Royale, this is the version you want to buy. There is no way, this will not be the number one blu ray of 2012. Anchor Bay really gave you fans an experience that you will be very happy with. This blu ray was so worth the wait. This is the Hunger Games with balls. Now, there is a quote. This is a classic. Buy it asap.
