Metal Review – Astrofaes – Dying Emotions Domain (2011)

Astrofaes - Dying Emotions DomainThis review is for the Negative Existence reissue of the black metal release of Dying Emotions Domain by Ukraine black metal band Astrofaes, and while Astrofaes is classified as a black metal band, their musical style eclipse the singular classification of simply black metal. They almost have a progressive feel to their music in addition to the obvious black metal tendencies that they exhibit.

The opening song proper of the album, Fiery Mysticism, is an opus unto itself coming in at nine minutes. It displays a lot of the ammunition that Astrofaes packs just in this single song from black metal blastbeats to progressive rhythms and, of course, solid vocal stylings. Littered with riffs, at no point does any riffs ever feel forced or out of place on this track.

At Nightfall follows thereafter and is more of a higher tempo, droning-type black metal track with a ton of blastbeats. Straight after that point, comes Path To Burning Space, which almost portrays a viking metal / power metal style layered on to a black metal rhythm. It is a nice change of pace and a pretty fun song. I have actually not heard too many instrumentals this year, so this was a welcome surprise to me.

Necromantical Screams follows that and hits you head on with a quick tempo straight into a daunting slow riff and then quickly back into the madness. This is some serious songwriting on this one.

The surprise of the album comes at us next with Ad Infinitum (Dark II). The beginning sounds like something out of Ozzy’s back catalog, but quickly turns into Astrofaes’ unique work with some haunting riffwork and a feast for the ears deserving of this Halloween season. The vocals are very different with almost a gothic metal / doom metal style. There are also various riffs thrown in to make this one the most distict track on the album.

Dying Emotions Domain follows and starts with another haunting acoustic opening into a horrific soundtrack-style rhythm. The song turns out to be one of the more rocking tracks on the album and flows very nicely. After that point, the album closes with yet another haunting melody, this time a horrific piano piece sends us on our way.

Overall, Dying Emotions Domain is a solid release by Astrofaes and one that I am looking forward to listening to even more. I think that the haunting style of much of the album fits that autumn feeling that I am in now as well. Only a couple more weeks until Halloween.

Negative Existence will be reissuing the debut album of the superlative Ukrainian black metal group ASTROFAES. Throughout the years ASTROFAES have bound themselves to the concept of the resurrection of the Spirit of Slavonic Lands; the pride, honor and blood of their ancestors. Each and every song on Dying Emotions Domain is filled with the atmosphere of nature’s might and the mystery of the everlasting universe. Thick, heavy guitars and melodic keyboards effectively concoct black metal laced with progression, originality and a direct influence from the old sound.

Dying Emotions Domain was originally released on Oriana Productions in 1998.
