Movie Review – X Marks the Spot (2011)

X Marks the Spot

Twisted Central Productions and Aegis Studios have teamed up to produce X Marks the Spot, a short horror film based on social media.

In this chilling horror short, proving that indie horror is where it’s at, writer Tammy Dupal brings us a disturbing tale of someone who could truly be your next door neighbor and the horror that could ensue from divulging too much information to complete strangers.

X Marks the Spot is a breath of fresh air to the horror community because it tackles a subject that is close to all of us these days – social media. The truth of the matter is that this is something that I am sure is happening to people every day and that makes this story all the more frightening. Real life horror is much more terrifying than perceived horror in a film, so when you tackle a subject that has every possibility of happening, the tale hits home a lot harder.

As you would expect, being a low budget short, the actors are new and some of the inexperience shows, but that is not to say that the acting is bad by any stretch of the imagination. The roles are all carried out with believability, which is all that you could ask for from your cast.

I am the judge on a few horror festivals and I am afforded the luxury of being able to watch many horror shorts by judging them. I would easily put X Marks the Spot up there with any of the horror shorts that I have seen in a long time. I have a feeling that we are looking at something special right here and I hope to see a lot more of this team for years to come.
