Movie Review-The Hellraiser Collection ( 6 film set)

Plot-Thanks to Echo Bridge. They just released the Hellraiser collection which spans Hellraiser III-Hell On Earth all the way to Hellraiser VIII-Hellworld.

Review-This 2 disc dvd set features all 6 movies with their original special features. The picture and sound quality is about the same as the originals. Except Hellraiser III. Hellraiser III originally came out on Lionsgate home video, and the quality was awful and the picture was grainy, and in the extras was the video for Motorhead which was not that much better. Who would have thought when Clive Barker and New World Pictures first released Hellraiser, that 24 years later they would still be cashing in on the name and making so many bad made for dvd sequels. I guess this review can serve as a warning when the films stop meaning something and just tacked a hellraiser name and made on the cheap to milk fans. To be fair, part 3 was way better than it gets credit for being. This is the one where instead of the menacing demon from the first two films..he felt like a freddy kruger esque killer. J.P. Monroe buys this sculpture which has the remains of Pinhead and from there the fun starts. To me, this is not quite as good as 1 and 2, but it was not as bad as what is to come.

Almost 9 years later, we get the Hellraiser Bloodline. This is when Hellraiser was getting bad. This is the one that original director Kevin Yagher disowned, saying that behind his back the studio took liberties with the film. And Joe Chappelle was brought in to finish it up.

In the 22nd century, a scientist attempts to right the wrong his ancestor created: the puzzle box that opens the gates of Hell and unleashes Pinhead and his Cenobite legions. This film was completely out of left field. Hellraiser almost in space with a lot of flashbacks. Now, I was a fan of Jason X and love franchises to take chances, but this one tries to completely change itself way too much without having none of the original flare or fun. Now, this is not a bad is just a misunderstood one. And watching it again, I am still dumbfounded that they tried to just throw away all of Barker’s vision. Not horrible, just different.

Inferno which came out in early 2000 is when Hellraiser just started to jump off the tracks. This was originally supposed to be named just Inferno, but could not get green lit. So they tacked on the hellraiser name. A shady police detective becomes embroiled in a strange world of murder, sadism and madness after being assigned a murder investigation against a madman known only as “The Engineer”. The film had the best cast of all the Hellraiser films. But, where the other Hellraisers were blood and guts, just all out gore..this one was more of a tense and suspenseful drama, that really had more to do with a police drama than any Hellraiser film. This just was a good film for what it was..but as a Hellraiser film..seriously?

Hellseeker is up next. This film starts the Rick Bota era. Where the films got cheaper in budget, and the content was so dumbed down that you almost felt insulted to be a fan. Not even bringing back their Nancy character…Kirsty Cotten could save this train wreck. Completely trashing the Hellraiser legacy, and trying to re do all the things we come to love from the early installments, Rick Bota gave us this abortion. You get very little Pinhead, and very little Kirsty. The car wreck in this film was ok. But, I know all the fan boys love this film. But, Avatar did do 1 billion dollars and they all loved that and the other abortion named Inception, so trust me when I tell you this film is bad.

Deader, the Kari Wuhrer from Remote Control one. Again, Bota and the 4 million dollar budget and this is what he comes up with? What did you do with the rest of the money?

A journalist uncovers an underground group who can bring back the dead and slowly becomes drawn into their world. This is the film that I started to see a trend. Doug Bradley doing less and less, and still getting a good paycheck. My question is how could anyone let this film be part of our franchise. I thought the last two were bad, this made absolutely no sense why it is a Hellraiser. What does it have in common with the origins? 10 minutes with Doug Bradley does not make this a Hellraiser. What a fucking pathetic waste of time.

Hellworld…which I reviewed a few weeks back. This is the online wanna be Saw film…featuring another whore to the horror community good old Lance Henriksen. This film you get at least 11 minutes of Pinhead. And oh lord, did Doug Bradley just seem so boring and just silly. He looked like a pedophile during Halloween. A waste of time to talk about this film.

Looking back at this series. I had fun with the majority of films. Even the bad ones like Deader, had a cheese factor to them. But, Hellraiser was supposed to be rebooted and given a 2nd life and instead the company keep putting out these rushed under budget direct to dvd hate fests that are meant to insult the fans. Revelations is awful, worst than Hellworld. It just needs to end, when Clive takes his name out of it..and the fans are all is time to finally lay it to rest.
