Movie Review-Hellraiser:Hellworld (2005)

Plot-When five Internet gamers are invited to a special party thrown by the  website Hellworld, they are about to get more than they bargained for when they find out Hellworld is not just a game.

Review-When Hellraiser first was released by New World video in 1987, did anyone think we would be in 2011 and this once fresh and original franchise would feel so uninspired? As a horror fan, I have now sat thru every Hellraiser..even the upcoming direct to dvd Hellraiser: Revelations. It is sad, that they have disrespected this franchise so much. Deader, was not even supposed to be a Hellraiser film. But, they slapped the name on there just to get a green light and maybe milk the fans some more. Watching this film, the Hellraiser I was a fan of is long forgotten and it is sad because it had more than 4 minutes of Pinhead and was solid story telling, bloody and very violent. This film felt like they watched Saw way too much. And Lance Henriksen will just about whore himself in any way possible for a dollar. When I watched Revelations, I was so furious..I wanted to send a letter to the Weinstein’s and beg them to just pull the plug. Let this die. Talk about some missed opportunities. A year after Hellworld came out, was the Hellraiser rumors. They were going to invest all this money, and after watching films like Inside and Martyrs, they were going to get the Inside guys at first, then the Martyrs guys to write a script and shoot it. It was one of their top priorities. Then, it all fell thru thanks to disappointing films and no profit and they instead went with another direct to dvd cheapie throwaway to show the fans what they really think of us. Revelations is unwatchable, and for that matter I know no one watched the finished product not even the director. They released it with blindfolds on and ready to defend their vision to the fans who will blast it, they knew it was coming. So much so, the studio asked me for the screener back and to pull down the review. But, we are talking about Hellworld. You know what, after Deader which had the same director, I threw my surrender flag in the air. But, I had to see Hellworld and Revelations. Just for the legacy of what the first two or three meant to me as a fan. Hellworld is almost a masterpiece compared to Revelations. But, it is unwatchable if not compared to it.

The film starts off the 5 friends go to the funeral of one of their friends. One of the characters at the funeral Mike is upset. He lost his friend. And Jake asks him ” what is your deal”. So, if you go to a funeral you are not supposed to be upset or angry. Then we fast forward two years later, Jessica still grieving over the loss of her boyfriend due to the Hellworld game, decides with the other 4 to go to a anniversary party for the game. Lance is the host. And thru this film we get sprinkles of Pinhead. We probably get 7 to 8 minutes total out of 94 minute film. And, Doug sure looks bored when we see him like he is just going thru the motions. He had to know how bad this film was. Lance is oblivious, as long as there is a payday he will act in anything. This film does not borrow, it rips off films like Saw in its approach, the earlier Hellraisers were based on the puzzle box, this one is more revenge and cat and mouse. When did Clive Barker and his vision become so dull? Talk about a franchise that is not only dead, but every time we get another Hellraiser it just seems they get worst. When was the last Hellraiser anyone said..” you know what, I have to see this again..awesome”. I mean, they been thru history, space, corrupt police, a new hellraiser and now the internet. Can we finally pull the plug and call it a day?

On a positive note, Echo Bridge gave us special features. Which included a director’s commentary track that I had to listen to after watching it and they talked about writing two scripts at once and that this film was their vision to a tee. So now I know that I will never watch anything this guy Bota puts out again. And, a 20 plus minute making of with cast and crew that had less life than this dead film. These people thought they were making Avatar the way they were acting. ” When my agent called me, I told him Hellraiser oh my god, I would do this for free”… judging by what I just watched, I think you got your wish…

2 out of 10..and that is for the 14 twists towards the end…
