Metal Review – Skogen – Svitjod (2011)

Skogen - SvitjodSkogen is a Swedish black metal band and their second release, Svitjod, is something special. While there has not been much progression since their debut release, Vittra, they are in a genre where progression is not needed.

Skogen relies heavily on atmosphere and sets up a dark and brooding atmosphere very nicely on Svitjod. Haxsabbat (Crimen Laesae Divinae Maiestatis) is a great song. Its slow, brooding drone continues for 8+ minutes and is worth every second of it. It is total atmosphere and paints such a nice portrait for the remainder of the album. You cannot help but bang your head to this gem.

Overall, the album is an extremely solid effort and something that every black metal fan should be seeking out.
