Metal Review – Dying Fetus – History Repeats (2011)

Dying Fetus - History RepeatsIf you want to celebrate 20 years, there are a few ways to do it right and Maryland’s Dying Fetus have selected a rare treat for their fans. They decided to release an EP of cover songs with one original exclusive added on. History Repeats features this legendary band’s take on some of their favorite classic death metal songs done in the Dying Fetus style that we have all come to love.

One of my favorite tracks is the opener, Fade Into Obscurity from Dehumanized. It just absolutely sets the table perfectly. It is a classic death metal track and is covered brilliantly. It is also one of the longer tracks coming in at under 4 1/2 minutes. Yes, you read that correctly. That is the downside to the album – it’s length. I would have loved to have something a little longer because you get teased when you see 7 tracks on the track listing. but the EP is still rather short (hence the label EP).

Rohypnol is another one that I love, but only comes in at 42 seconds. It goes from a controlled groove to utter chaos in that time frame though and is worth every second of this brief track.

Unleashed Upon Mankind is a classic Bolt Thrower track and you know that this cover will be intense. Once you listen to it, you will be rewarded beyond your expectations.

Overall, for what we get, the EP is handled brilliantly and flows so nicely. It is a quick listen, but is worthy of multiple listens at once, so fasten your seat belts and bring the pain. You will love History Repeats.
