Metal Review – ECHTRA – Paragate (2011)

ECHTRA - ParagateBased out of Oregon, ECHTRA is a one-man atmospheric blackened drone project and Paragate is its second release. With the release of this year’s Paragate, you really get to delve into the soul of a musician who plays from their heart and soul and tells a story. From the press release itself, it states that Paragate is “a psycho-physiological journey into the Otherworld.” With its droning melodies, it is aural bliss at its best letting the listener envision what they want during this fantastic journey.

Paragate comes to you in two sections, 23:00 minutes exactly in each section. My gut feeling is that most metal fans will not be able to swallow this tough pill because of the sheer length of each of the sections. It is not music to listen to when you want to bang your head. It is music meant for thinking. Sit back with your favorite beverage of choice – for me, this morning, it is coffee. Just listen and enjoy the ambient melodies and let your mind wander. The beauty of releases like this is that my trip will be totally different than your trip. We all take a different journey, albeit from the same path.
