Metal Review Moonsorrow – Varjoina Kuljemme Kuolleiden Maassa (2011) Review

Moonsorrow - Varjoina Kuljemme Kuolleiden Maassa (2011) ReviewMoonsorrow is a band that I can really get behind and Varjoina Kuljemme Kuolleiden Maassa is one of my most anticipated albums of 2011. Right from the outset of this review, I will tell you that they did not disappoint with Varjoina Kuljemme Kuolleiden Maassa in any way. This is an epic release from a truly epic Pagan Metal band. Yes, I said Pagan Metal. They are not Viking Metal by any means, yet they are always classified as Viking Metal. They like to classify themselves as Epic Heathen Metal, but most people have never heard of that subgenre of Metal.

Hailing from Helsinki, Finland, Moonsorrow has been bringing it since 1995. Their sound is truly epic and there is not a weak link in the band. Varjoina Kuljemme Kuolleiden Maassa marks their sixth full-length release and their first since 2007’s Viides Luku – Hävitetty.

I believe that many people will find it hard to believe, but there are only four tracks on Varjoina Kuljemme Kuolleiden Maassa. The liner notes say seven, but three of those are intros for the four epic tracks. Each track is epic in nature and in length, yet each song brings something to the table differently than the last.

Songs like Huuto, which is probably my favorite track at this point, is more melodic than most of the other tracks on the album. Coming in at 16 minutes, it never has a dull moment from the beautiful acoustic arrangement at the beginning to the sudden tempo update which leads into the song itself. The atmosphere painted in Huuto is amazing.

The opening track, Tähdetön, starts off with a great, yet simple, riff. Tähdetön is more of a slower tempo song that has a slow, powerful sound throughout the song. The track Muinaiset incorporates the Pagan Metal sound that we hear a lot with Moonsorrow. The closing track, Kuolleiden Maa, is a proper closing track. Even from the opening riff, it just feels like a closing track for an album.

All in all, this is a release that should not be missed, so make sure that you pick it up. Let me know what you think of Varjoina Kuljemme Kuolleiden Maassa with your feedback below.

Moonsorrow is a Pagan Metal band formed in Helsinki, Finland, in 1995. Musically, the band incorporates elements of Black Metal and Folk Metal in their sound. The band call their sound “Epic Heathen Metal” and try to distance themselves from the term “Viking Metal” as much as possible, as the vast majority of their lyrics do not concern Vikings, since they are Finnish, not Norse.
